Personal History: Lan Wangji history
Personality: When he was young, Lan Wangji was a stickler for rules and doing things based on the what was expected of him in terms of Cultivation and the Lan sect. He would refuse to break any and was a model student spending much of his time in the library reading or training, making him one of the top cultivators of his generation. He was known as one of the Twin Jades, a title he shared with his older brother Lan Xichen. Their abilities as well as the Lan sect's 3000 rules were well known across the Cultivation world.
At least until Wei Wuxian arrived and disrupted everything. In his attempts to get the man to behave or stop him from breaking rules, Lan Wangji would end up breaking rules himself and getting punished. He always accepted the punishment with the same resolve, composure and strength as he would with anything else. Never flinching or crying out no matter how badly he was beaten. As he grew older and he learned more about how the world worked and saw the cruelty that was put out there from other sects, he often would break rules based on what he saw as his own personal sense of right and wrong. No longer believing that things are completely black and white like he was originally taught.
Lan Wangji has a very strong sense of justice and does things not because he wants to be recognized but because he wants to be able to help people. there is a saying that wherever chaos is, Lan Wangji will appear and try to help. It isn't that he actively seeks out trouble, it is simply that he isn't one to walk away as soon as he hears about people who need assistance. He knows that he has the ability to help and he isn't afraid to take on any sort of issue. This also makes him question the decisions that people at the top of the cultivation world are making. Instead of following them along like he normally would of, he will question it and follow his own path to see where it takes him. Particularly when it came to the treatment of Wei Wuxian. After his death, Lan Wangji was lashed 33 times for fighting against his own clansman and trying to protect Wei Wuxian which went against everything he was taught and seemed like a rebellion against his uncle and the beliefs they have held onto for generations. Once again, he accepted the punishment, but this one was far more complicated. Not only did he let his sect down, but he felt he had let down Wei Wuxian by not walking by his side and supporting him when he needed it. He blamed himself as well for not being able to save him.
He also brought home the very young Wen youth that he found in the Burial Mounds after everyone else was killed. Even though the Wens were to all be destroyed, he refused to let this boy see the same fate. Taken by a fever, the boy eventually recovered but had no memories of who he was. Lan Wangji chose to raise him at the Lan sect and his name became Lan Sizhui, a boy that he raised like his own son, guiding him and giving him all the care and devotion he is capable of giving. Perhaps this was his way of making it up to those he had let down, by helping Sizhui and giving him the chance to grow and learn and flourish.
He is also very stubborn. If he believes in something or has made his mind to do something, he is not likely to budge from doing it or seeing things through. In his youth that meant he would stubbornly enforce all rules, taking justice into his own hands when he noticed that Wei Wuxian was breaking the rules. It didn't particularly go well for him, often ending up in trouble himself because of his attempts. And in his later years he was stubborn about standing by Wei Wuxian's side even when the rest of the world saw him as an outcast. He would fight and protect him no matter who decided to go against them, even if it was his own family members.
On the surface, Lan Wangji seems cold and aloof, not caring about anyone. However, internally, Lan Wangji is a passionate person who feels deeply. After Wei Wuxian's death, Lan Wangji becomes drunk in an attempt to understand why Wei Wuxian enjoyed the taste, and, in a fit of grief, brands his own chest with the iron of the Qishan Wen Clan. He will do anything for the ones he cares about whether it is Wei Wuxian, his brother, or the young Wen remnant that he adopted into the Lan clan upon Wei Wuxian's death. He's fiercely protective and would throw himself in front of sword that gets pointed towards those he cares about.
Key themes: The main themes of Lan Wangji's story is change and devotion. Despite his personality seeming to never change from cold and distant, he is the one character that probably showed the most progression internally. He went from being absolutely certain about the rules of the world and wanting to follow them completely, to being more open to the possibility of other options. By the time that Wei Wuxian has returned, Lan Wangji has becoming willing to go against his own clan to protect him and follow the path that Wei Wuxian chooses to walk.
This ties into his devotion. In the beginning he was devoted to his clan and although that doesn't change, it grows to include Wei Wuxian. His devotion to him, protecting him and walking the same road with him changes how he behaves around the other cultivators. He puts himself between them and Wei Wuxian at the Jin sect when they threaten to capture him. He places himself between all the sects and Wei Wuxian at the Buriel Mounds when they all descend upon it thinking he kidnapped the junior disciples. He is willing to do anything to protect him, showing how devoted he has become to that man and his cause.
Main Motivation: Protecting the ones he cares about. Wei Wuxian, his sect, Lan Sizhui. He would stop at nothing to make sure that they don't come to harm. And anyone that does try to harm them will feel his wrath. And the wrath of Lan Wangji is nothing to take lightly. He will take you down with the force of a typhoon if you threaten them. He has felt the pain of loss before with his mother and Wei Wuxian once, he does not wish to watch any others be taken from him.
